Jharsuguda, May 30: A notorious criminal was injured in a police encounter during a major anti-robbery operation at Rengali in Odisha's Jharsuguda District. The accused, identified as Jay Chauhan, sustained a bullet injury to his right leg after allegedly opening fire on police personnel during an attempted robbery operation.

The encounter took place at Gandhi Chhaka in Brajarajnagar when police intercepted Chauhan and his associates based on intelligence inputs regarding a planned robbery. According to police sources, Chauhan, who is facing more than ten serious criminal cases, allegedly fired at the police team when officers moved in to apprehend him. In response, police returned fire, injuring him in the exchange.

While Chauhan was apprehended, his accomplices managed to escape from the scene. He was immediately shifted to the district headquarters hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Confirming the incident, Himanshu Lal said the operation was conducted on the basis of actionable intelligence to prevent a serious crime. He stated that police followed standard procedures and took necessary steps to ensure public safety during the operation.

Authorities have launched a search operation to trace the absconding associates and are further investigating Chauhan's alleged criminal network. Local residents expressed relief over the police action, citing the accused's long criminal record and his alleged involvement in several unlawful activities in the region.

Police officials reiterated that the use of force was a last-resort measure aimed at preventing an imminent threat and minimizing risks to civilians. The department has also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across Jharsuguda and nearby areas.
