Bhubaneswar, Mar 30: With the onset of the summer season, Nandankanan Zoological Park authorities have initiated comprehensive measures to safeguard both the animals and visiting tourists. The park, spread across approximately 319 acres, houses over 42,000 animals from 179 species, including 115 Indian and 64 foreign species.
To ensure the animals' well-being, arrangements have been made to meet their physical requirements and needs. Water sprinklers, fans, and coolers have been installed in enclosures, while shaded areas provide relief to herbivores. Special attention is being given to sensitive species such as elephants, chimpanzees, gibbons, and foreign monkeys. Elephants are protected from heat with oil applied to their heads, and cold water, ice, and ORS solutions are provided to other animals.
Bird enclosures have been equipped with shaded perches and cooling systems, while water tanks and sprinklers maintain a comfortable temperature. For reptiles such as iguanas and anacondas, specialized cooling arrangements have been made. Fruits like watermelon, coconuts, and ice creams are being provided to animals to keep them hydrated and nourished.
The park has also made arrangements for visitors’ comfort. Cold drinking water is available at multiple points, and temporary and permanent water points have been set up across the park. A dedicated team of veterinarians and animal care officers monitors the animals throughout the day, while tourists can receive first aid and hydration support if needed.
Authorities have emphasised that these measures aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both animals and visitors during the peak summer months.
