Heavy Rain Disrupts Normal Life in North Bengal, IMD Issues Red Alert for Extreme Downpour

Kolkata, June 28: Incessant rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across parts of North Bengal on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the sub-Himalayan region until Monday.

The weather office has cautioned about the possibility of landslides in the hilly districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, along with waterlogging and inundation in low-lying areas of the plains. Authorities have been advised to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures.

The IMD has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts, with isolated locations likely to experience extremely heavy showers until Monday morning.

Officials said the administration is closely monitoring the situation as continuous overnight rain has led to a steady rise in the water levels of several rivers, including the Teesta, Jaldhaka, Dayna, Leesh and Gheesh.

According to the IMD, Kumargram in Alipurduar recorded the state's highest rainfall at 16 cm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday.

Other areas that received significant rainfall include Sevoke in Darjeeling (12 cm), Raidak Tea Estate in Alipurduar (12 cm), Hasimara (8 cm), Falakata (7 cm), and Noweranuddi Tea Estate in Jalpaiguri (6 cm).

The IMD has forecast that heavy rainfall will persist across North Bengal until July 2. Meanwhile, several districts in South Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds until July 3.
