Jajpur, July 29: In a remarkable display of loyalty, a two-year-old pet dog reportedly sacrificed its life after fighting a cobra to protect its owner in Odisha's Jajpur district. The incident occurred at Angalo village under Binjharpur police station and has left local residents moved by the animal's bravery.
The dog, named Putul, belonged to Pradeep Kumar Nayak, who runs a tent house business at Hanuman Chhak in Angalo village. According to the owner, Putul was born two years ago to another pet dog named Chuin and had since become a devoted companion.
On Monday night, Pradeep was sleeping at his business premises while Putul rested on the floor beside his bed. During the night, a cobra allegedly entered the room. Sensing the threat, Putul confronted the snake in an attempt to protect its owner.
According to the owner, the dog fought the cobra for several minutes without barking, apparently to avoid waking him. The struggle ended with the cobra being killed, but Putul suffered a fatal snakebite during the encounter.
Pradeep discovered the dead dog and the snake's severed body when he woke up the following morning. The incident left him devastated, and he reportedly mourned the loss of Putul as he would a family member.
News of the dog's sacrifice quickly spread through the village, drawing residents who gathered to pay their respects. In recognition of Putul's loyalty and courage, the owner organized a ceremonial funeral procession before performing the last rites.
