Keonjhar, May 18: Police in Keonjhar conducted a large-scale operation against the sand mafia, raiding 12 locations across Anandapur, Ghasipura, and Nandipada police limits.
The crackdown, carried out under the direction of the district SP, led to the seizure of Rs 25 lakh in cash and over 30 vehicles linked to the illegal sand trade.
Authorities detained more than 12 individuals for questioning, including those directly involved in sand smuggling and trade. The raids targeted the homes and properties of mafia members and their associates. Officials said the operation aimed to dismantle the network behind illegal sand extraction in the region.
The operation was led by Additional SP Snehasis Sahu and Anandapur SDPO Kamal Lochan Panda, with multiple police teams participating. The crackdown also included searches at the residence of Hatadihi block vice-chairman and BJD state secretary Ratikanta Rout.
Authorities emphasised that the raids are part of a broader effort to curb illegal mining and restore law and order in Keonjhar, adding that strict action will continue against those engaged in sand smuggling.
