Nicolas Pepe double seals historic African qualification spot
History belongs to West Africa after a clinical performance secured a coveted tournament breakthrough. Ivory Coast reached the Ivory Coast World Cup knockouts for the first time following a decisive 2-0 triumph against Curacao in Philadelphia. This landmark win breaks a long-standing curse for the nation, which had failed to progress past the group stage in all previous tournament appearances.
Nicolas Pepe carried his nation to victory by striking early in the seventh minute, slotted calmly past goalkeeper Eloy Room. Curacao fought to keep their debut campaign alive, but defensive organization from the Ivorian backline restricted their opportunities.
Pepe struck again in the 64th minute with a powerful drive from the edge of the box, completing his double. This feat makes him only the fifth player to score multiple goals for his country at a men's world tournament.
Six points secured second place in Group E for the Ivorians, right behind leaders Germany. Les Elephants now prepare for a challenging Round of 32 knockout clash, where they will square off against either France or Norway.
