India demands immediate answers from Iran after deadly missile strike kills sailor

India confronts Iran over fatal maritime missile strike.

India summoned top Iranian diplomats to New Delhi on Tuesday following a deadly cruise missile attack that killed an Indian crew member in the Strait of Hormuz. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs met with Iran’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, to lodge a strong protest. The diplomatic showdown occurred hours after the United Arab Emirates confirmed that its commercial tankers, Mombasa and Bahia, were struck while navigating Omani territorial waters.

Iranian cruise missiles targeted the vessels during their transit through the southern passage of the strait. The strike on the Mombasa killed one Indian national and injured eight other sailors, leaving four with severe wounds. Emergency teams fought intense onboard fires caused by the explosions before bringing the situation under control. The UAE government labeled the operation a clear breach of international law and stated it reserves the right to respond.

This escalation coincides with heightened volatility in the region, which handles a significant portion of global energy shipments. For India, stability in this maritime corridor is critical because a large volume of its crude oil imports and thousands of regional merchant sailors transit these waters daily.

Rising Regional Friction

Tehran indicated its forces targeted several non-compliant vessels. Iranian state media claimed the navy fired upon hostile American ships. The violence follows a series of pre-emptive military strikes by US Central Command inside Iran designed to protect commercial shipping lines.

These operations match a sharp shift in Washington’s regional policy. US President Donald Trump announced a strict naval blockade on Iranian ports alongside a twenty percent fee on specific cargo transiting the waterway. The American military plans to begin enforcing these enforcement measures immediately, raising fears of further disruptions to international trade routes.
