Italian leader Giorgia Meloni welcomes Narendra Modi in Rome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Rome on Tuesday evening to initiate critical diplomatic discussions with his counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, finalising the closing leg of his five-nation global itinerary. Meloni extended a warm reception by sharing an image of both leaders from the stands of the iconic Colosseum, publicly greeting the Indian leader as a trusted partner. This bilateral meeting aims to consolidate economic alliances, focusing heavily on reviewing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 and evaluating the logistical framework of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

Odisha shares a distinct cultural parallel with this diplomatic milestone, as the state’s ancient maritime merchants historically established early commercial links with the Mediterranean world, mirroring India's contemporary efforts to rebuild robust European trade routes. Bilateral trade between the two nations hit an impressive 16.77 billion dollars in 2025, driven by investments spanning clean energy, defense infrastructure, technological innovation, and science. Beyond top-tier political negotiations, the Indian leader intends to visit the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) headquarters located in the capital to emphasize global food distribution security.

Engaging Diaspora and Culture

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani officially received the Indian delegation at the airport, setting an optimistic tone for the remaining state engagements. Representatives of the local Indian community gathered at the state hotel to perform traditional music compositions based on Raga Hamsadhwani, alongside showcasing fine art inspired by the holy ghats of Varanasi. Representatives from the Sanatana Dharma Samgha also interacted with the visiting leader, celebrating the Italian Parliament's formal recognition of their organization as an official religion within the country.
