New Delhi, July 4:The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored its upgraded Unified Member Portal following scheduled maintenance. However, services related to the Universal Account Number (UAN) have now been shifted to the government's UMANG app.
With the change, EPF subscribers can no longer activate their UAN or generate a new one through the EPFO website. These services are now available exclusively via the UMANG app, where users must complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT) to access them.
To activate an existing UAN, users need to download the UMANG app, navigate to EPFO Services, and select"UAN Activation "under" UAN Services Through Face Authentication."After completing the face authentication process, they can follow the on-screen instructions to finish the activation.
Employees seeking a new UAN must open the UMANG app, go to EPFO Services, select "UAN Allotment and Activation," complete Aadhaar face authentication, and proceed as guided by the application.
Employees who already have an EPF account but have not yet been allotted a UAN can also use the app to obtain one. They will be required to verify their registered mobile number, enter the necessary member details, and complete the verification process. Once generated, the new UAN will be automatically linked to their existing EPF account.
The upgraded system also simplifies the process of recovering a forgotten UAN. Members can retrieve their UAN by entering their registered mobile number, uploading the required identity or address proof, and verifying the one-time password (OTP) sent to their mobile number.
EPFO has clarified that discontinuing UAN activation through the Member Portal does not affect the settlement of death claims. Eligible nominees and legal heirs can continue filing such claims through the existing procedure.
Separately, the newly notified Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme, 2026, which came into effect on June 29, 2026, introduces revised rules for partial withdrawals. Under the updated provisions, EPF members must maintain a minimum balance of 25% of their eligible member balance in their EPF account before making any partial withdrawal. The withdrawable amount will be calculated only after reserving this mandatory balance.
