Local filmmakers target international screens with Canadian collaborations

Regional cinema from Odisha will soon reach international audiences through upcoming film projects in Canada. Canadian-Odia filmmaker Deepa Mahanti recently shared exciting plans to shoot and screen local movies overseas. This announcement happened during a special creative workshop held at Shatabdira Kalakar in Bhubaneswar. Leading actors, directors, journalists, and technical experts gathered together to discuss expanding the global footprint of regional entertainment.

Government Support Drives Global Reach

Veteran cinematographer Jugal Debata addressed the audience regarding the urgent need for institutional backing. He explained that agencies like the National Film Development Corporation must step in to elevate regional cinema onto the world stage. Debata expressed deep gratitude to Mahanti for providing a much-needed platform in North America. This fresh push aligns perfectly with recent state government efforts to promote Odia art and culture to the diaspora globally.

Building Connections across Borders

Social worker Dr. Chidatmika Khatua organized this important interaction to brainstorm effective growth strategies for the industry. She revealed ambitious plans to build active cinematic relationships with over fifteen different countries in the near future. Actor and producer Pritiraj Satpathy also highlighted that direct Canadian support will help screen local productions for much broader audiences. These international screenings will create new revenue streams for filmmakers.

Many prominent cultural figures actively participated in the exchange program. Singer Susmita Das, editor Durga Samantaray, and art director Sangram Maharana joined several other producers, directors, and writers to support this initiative. Major Kalpana Das concluded the successful event by delivering a formal vote of thanks to all attendees.
