Cabo Verde reaches historic World Cup knockouts via draw
Cabo Verde earned a remarkable spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage by grinding out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia. Finishing second in Group H behind Spain, the Blue Sharks made history as the smallest nation ever to reach the global tournament's latter rounds.
Island nation Cabo Verde managed to advance by drawing all three of their group matches. This unusual feat makes them the first team since Chile in 1998 to progress without recording a single group stage victory. With a population of just over half a million people, their success represents a striking triumph over nations with vast footballing resources. Deroy Duarte claimed the Player of the Match award for his commanding midfield performance during the final group game.
Both teams struggled to break down opposing defenses during a tight first half. Jamiro Monteiro created the best early chance but saw his low shot saved by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. Monteiro pushed forward again after halftime following good work from Wagner Pina, though his resulting effort lacked power. Later in the match, Kevin Pina curled a left-footed strike just wide of the target.
Saudi Arabia exits the tournament at the bottom of Group H with two points. Meanwhile, Coach Bubista prepares his squad for their biggest challenge yet. Cabo Verde will battle defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3, hoping to keep their extraordinary run alive.
