Guwahati, July 3: The Guwahati Crime Branch has issued summons to a news anchor and Shrishti Raghuwanshi, cousin of the deceased Raja Raghuwanshi, for allegedly making defamatory comments about the revered Kamakhya Temple.

According to city police officials, a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, was served to the accused on June 13, directing them to appear for questioning on June 23 and 24. However, neither the news anchor nor Shrishti Raghuwanshi complied with the summons.

"A case has been registered at the Crime Branch Police Station under Crime Branch Case No. 04/2025, invoking Sections 196(2), 299, and 302 of BNSS, 2023," said Ankur Jain, Joint Commissioner of Guwahati City Police.

The controversy stems from a televised interview in which the anchor allegedly made unverified and derogatory statements about the Kamakhya Temple, a sacred and ancient Shakti Peetha in Assam. Shrishti Raghuwanshi, appearing as the interviewee, reportedly endorsed these remarks, thereby intensifying public outrage.

Police said the comments were not only offensive towards a holy Hindu shrine but also posed a threat to communal harmony by potentially inciting religious sentiments.

"The remarks have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community and disturbed public order. Hence, legal action was initiated," added the senior police official.
