Bhubaneswar, August 16: In a shocking hit-and-run case on Raksha Bandhan (August 9), two pedestrians- a mother and daughter- were killed after being hit by a speeding Thar near Patrapada, Bhubaneswar. The victims, Rebati and her daughter Reshma, were crossing the national highway with Rebati’s infant son when the incident occurred. Reshma died on the spot, while Rebati succumbed to her injuries two days later. The child survived with minor injuries.
Khandagiri police have arrested 22-year-old Scorpio driver Ankit, who was allegedly racing with the Thar at the time. Another man, Krushna Chandra Pradhan (42), was also arrested for aiding Ankit’s escape. Both were denied bail and sent to judicial custody.
The Thar vehicle was seized within 24 hours, but its owner, Somanath Behera, remains absconding. Police are continuing efforts to trace and apprehend him.
