Sambalpur, Jul 31: The Hirakud Dam authorities on Friday opened two additional sluice gates as the reservoir continues to receive heavy inflows from persistent rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
With the latest release, the total number of open sluice gates has increased to 14, including nine on the left side and five on the right.
The increased discharge is expected to raise the water level of the Mahanadi River downstream, prompting authorities to issue a fresh alert for residents living in low-lying areas along the river.
The district administration has advised people in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the flood situation continues to be monitored.
The decision comes amid a steady rise in the Hirakud reservoir's water level over the past 24 hours, with officials closely watching the inflow and downstream conditions.
