India secures back to back Asian Games badminton medals
Securing a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games, Indian shuttlers concluded their campaign on Wednesday following a 3-1 defeat to China in Aichi, Japan. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty claimed the only victory for their squad during this challenging semi final tie.
Defending their Asian Games men's doubles title, Satwik and Chirag defeated reigning world champions Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang. Taking the match 21-11, 22-20, they controlled the opening game and maintained focus when their opponents saved two match points at 20-20. Converting their third match point leveled the overall tie at 1-1. This podium finish marks India's second consecutive medal in the team event, building upon the historic silver won at the 2023 Hangzhou Games where they also faced China in the finals. Competing against traditional powerhouses remains a crucial benchmark for the growing dominance of Indian badminton on the global stage.
Singles players face tough opposition
Earlier in the day, Lakshya Sen played Shi Yuqi in the opening singles match. Dropping the game 21-16, 21-18, Lakshya put up a strong fight, pulling level at 16-16 in the second game before Shi took control. Ayush Shetty subsequently lost to world No. 12 Li Shi Feng with a score of 21-19, 21-13, giving China a 2-1 advantage.
Deciding doubles match concludes tie
Requiring a victory to stay in the contest, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun played He Ji Ting and Liu Yi in the fourth match. Despite winning the second game, the Indian duo ultimately fell 21-16, 17-21, 21-9. This result ended hopes for a second straight team final appearance. Earlier in the tournament, India had guaranteed a medal by sweeping hosts Japan 3-0 in the quarter finals with strong performances across the board.
