Hirakud Dam opens 4 more gates amid increased water inflow due to heavy rainfall

Sambalpur, Sept 24: Authorities at the Hirakud Dam have opened four additional gates, bringing the total number of gates currently open to twelve. This decision was made in response to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area, which led to a significant rise in water inflow into the reservoir.

As of now, eight gates on the left bank and four on the right bank are open to release excess water. The dam is receiving a water inflow of 2,05,426 cusecs per second, while 1,67,307 cusecs per second are being discharged through the open gates. The water level in the reservoir has reached 629.97 feet due to the increased inflow.

Dam authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that they are taking all necessary precautions to maintain the safety of the dam and nearby areas. The gates will remain open as required to ensure the reservoir maintains a safe water level.
