Hirakud, Jul 9: The Hirakud Dam authorities have closed four of its gates following a decrease in water levels caused by reduced rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi Basin. At present, water is being released through 16 gates.

This move comes after the dam had opened 20 gates on Sunday to release the season’s first floodwater due to continuous heavy rainfall over the region. With rainfall now subsiding, officials have adjusted the outflow to maintain safe reservoir levels.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate risk of flooding in downstream areas. The situation is under constant watch, and further changes in gate operations may be made based on updated weather and river flow data. Officials assure that they are prepared to respond swiftly to any changes in rainfall or water levels.
