Bhubaneswar, Jan 10: Odisha is currently grappling with severe cold, disrupting daily life across the state. The mercury in the state capital dropped to 10°C, recorded at 5:30 AM today. Over the past four days, the state has consistently experienced record low temperatures.

Shimilipal also recorded sub-zero temperatures today, with the mercury falling to −1°C. Other notable low temperatures include G. Udayagiri at 2.6°C, Rourkela at 3.6°C, Jharsuguda at 6.2°C, and Kendujhar at 9°C. With Rourkela registering 3.6°C, it has now become the coldest city in Odisha.

The extreme cold has emptied city streets by 7 PM, while poor residents continue to brave the night outdoors. Many are seeking shelter wherever possible to protect themselves from the biting cold. Authorities from the Water Resources Department have warned that the cold wave is likely to intensify further.

Shimilipal has witnessed heavy snowfall, covering areas like Uparbahakamuda, Debasthali, Kumari, and Gurugudia in a thick white blanket. The wildlife and surrounding regions, including Yashipur, Thakurmunda, Karanjia, Raruwa, and Shukruli blocks, are also experiencing ongoing cold waves under dense snow cover.

This morning at 6 AM, the recorded temperatures across Shimilipal were: Upper Barakamuda −1°C, Gurugudia 1°C, Chahala and Naana 3°C, and Barehipani 5°C, according to the Shimilipal Tiger Project.

With temperatures expected to remain low, residents are being advised to take precautions and stay safe from the harsh winter conditions.
