New Delhi, May 1: India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection soared to a record ₹2.37 lakh crore in April, marking a 12.6% year-on-year increase, according to official data released on Wednesday.
This is the highest-ever GST mop-up since the indirect tax regime was introduced on July 1, 2017. The previous highest was ₹2.10 lakh crore, collected in April 2024. In comparison, March 2025 saw a collection of ₹1.96 lakh crore, reflecting a 9.9% annual growth.
A significant boost came from domestic transactions, which contributed around ₹1.9 lakh crore — up 10.7% year-on-year. Meanwhile, GST collected from imported goods surged 20.8% to ₹46,913 crore. Refunds also saw a sharp jump of 48.3%, amounting to ₹27,341 crore in April.
The GST momentum has been strong in recent months. February saw collections rise 9.1% year-on-year to ₹1.83 lakh crore, while January recorded ₹1.96 lakh crore, up 12.3% from the previous year.
