Sambalpur, July 17: In the wake of the tragic suicide of Soumyashree, a student of Fakir Mohan College in Balasore, the Odisha government has finally taken action in a separate but related case of student harassment reported months ago.
On Thursday, the Women’s Police Station in Sambalpur arrested Assistant Professor Gopinath Suna of Gangadhar Meher University’s Education Department. He was later produced before the court.
Sources said a female student had filed a complaint against Suna nearly four months ago, accusing him of harassment and inappropriate behavior. However, no significant action was taken at the time, raising serious concerns about administrative inaction.
The recent suicide incident has sparked widespread outrage, pushing authorities to expedite pending investigations. The government’s delayed response has come under sharp criticism, with student unions and civil society demanding stricter measures to ensure student safety on campuses.
