As the nation is gearing up to welcome Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles and the giver of wisdom and prosperity, the atmosphere is abuzz with devotion and festivities. Ganesh Chaturthi, observed annually on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, will be celebrated this year on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, according to the Panchang.
On this day, devotees install idols of Lord Ganesh in their homes and temples, offering prayers and rituals with utmost devotion for ten days.
It is believed that worshipping Lord Ganesh during this period brings happiness, prosperity, and fulfilment of desires. However, scriptures and traditions also warn against certain practices that must be avoided to ensure the blessings of the deity.
Avoid Looking at the Moon
Religious belief holds that sighting the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi is inauspicious. According to legend, the moon once mocked Lord Ganesh’s elephant head, which angered the deity and led him to curse the moon. It is believed that those who see the moon on this day may face false accusations. To ward off such ill effects, devotees are advised to read the story of the Syamantaka jewel from the Bhagavata Purana if the moon is accidentally sighted.
Do Not Bring a Broken Idol
On Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees are expected to install a new idol of Lord Ganesh at home. Bringing or worshipping a broken or damaged idol is considered inauspicious. Clay idols are recommended over plaster ones, as they are eco-friendly and spiritually significant.
Refrain from Eating Tamsic Food
Only sattvic (pure and vegetarian) food should be consumed during the festival. Items like garlic, onion, meat, and alcohol are strictly avoided, as they are believed to bring negativity and distract the mind from devotion. Instead, devotees offer Lord Ganesh his favourites – modaks and laddoos.
Tulsi is Forbidden
Unlike other Hindu rituals, the use of Tulsi (holy basil) leaves is prohibited in Ganesh worship. Mythology suggests that Tulsi once proposed marriage to Lord Ganesh, and upon rejection, cursed him. In turn, Ganesh cursed Tulsi, forbidding her use in his worship. Instead, durva grass is considered highly auspicious and should be offered.
Limit the Number of Idols
Tradition suggests keeping only one Ganesh idol at home. If more than one idol is installed, they must not face each other, as it is believed to create negative energy.
Avoid Black or Blue Attire
Wearing black or blue clothes during Ganesh Puja is considered inauspicious. Instead, bright colours like yellow, red, or green are recommended, symbolising positivity and enthusiasm.
Ways to Attain Divine Blessings
Offer 21 blades of durva grass to Lord Ganesh.
Serve modaks and laddoos as offerings.
Chant the mantra “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” with devotion.
The Cultural Significance
Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a religious festival but also a cultural celebration. It symbolises joy, prosperity, and collective harmony. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Ganesh on this day brings happiness, good fortune, and positivity into their homes while removing obstacles from life.
