France and Germany Lead Post-War Maritime Mission Excluding United States Command

European leaders propose independent naval coalition to secure Hormuz

European powers are crafting a strategic maritime coalition to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz, notably excluding the United States. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Tuesday that this post-war defensive mission seeks to involve non-belligerent parties, intentionally distancing the operation from the US, Israel, and Iran. This move signifies a desire for European autonomy in one of the world's most volatile transit points.

Germany’s anticipated participation marks a departure from its traditional hesitation regarding overseas military engagement. Berlin’s shift highlights the desperation to restore stability to global trade routes that have been paralysed by recent hostilities. By deploying mine-clearing vessels and naval assets under a European banner, these nations hope to rebuild the trust of commercial shipping giants currently avoiding the region.

While Europe plans for a post-war future, the present reality remains grim. US Central Command (CENTCOM) recently enforced a total blockade on Iranian ports, effectively halting 90% of Iran’s sea-based economy within a mere 36 hours. Admiral Brad Cooper reported that over a dozen warships and 10,000 personnel are currently maintaining "maritime superiority," turning back any merchant vessel attempting to breach the restrictions. Historically, the Strait of Hormuz serves as the world’s most important oil chokepoint, with nearly a fifth of global consumption passing through its narrow waters.
