Bastar, Aug 14: Once members of the Maoist insurgency and accustomed to carrying guns in the forests of Bastar, a group of former women Maoists has taken a remarkable step towards a new life. After surrendering their weapons, they recently walked the ramp in Raipur, showcasing traditional Chhattisgarh handloom and silk outfits.

The unique fashion show was organised in Raipur on the occasion of National Handloom Day. Around nine former women Maoists from Bastar participated in the event, wearing traditional Kosa silk and handwoven fabrics of Chhattisgarh.

As they walked the ramp with the confidence of professional models, the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium reportedly echoed with applause. The event not only celebrated the state’s rich handloom tradition but also highlighted the transformation of women who had left behind armed insurgency and embraced a new path of dignity, self-reliance and normal life.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai interacted with the former Maoists during the event. He encouraged them and extended his best wishes for their future.

The programme was held on August 7, while a video of the event surfaced on Thursday and attracted considerable attention on social media. Many users praised the women for their transformation and described the event as a powerful example of empowerment and rehabilitation.

One social media user wrote that it would have been difficult to imagine such a scene a few years ago and described it as a genuine example of empowerment. Another congratulated everyone involved and questioned why stories of transformation like these do not receive greater attention.

For the former women Maoists, the ramp was more than a fashion platform. It represented a symbolic journey from a life associated with guns and conflict to one focused on confidence, dignity, traditional craftsmanship and a hopeful future.
