Puri, Ap 25: The Nalaban area of Chilika Lake has been engulfed in flames, creating a smoke-filled environment all around. The fire is so intense that aquatic life is unable to safely enter the affected areas, and no one yet knows the exact cause of the blaze. Nearly one kilometer of the forested area has been destroyed, but the fire is still not fully under control.
After learning about the incident, fire department teams from Kanasa and Tangi, including personnel from Balipatpur and Bhushanpur, navigated boats into the lake area to douse the flames. Despite their tireless efforts, the fire continues to pose a serious threat.
Nalaban is a well-known bird sanctuary, attracting migratory birds from across Asia. With the blaze raging, birds have been frightened and are fleeing their habitats. Wildlife officials suspect that the fire may have been deliberately set by individuals attempting to catch fish illegally in the area, as some open patches of forest remain within the sanctuary.
The blaze has not only destroyed the environment but also impacted aquatic and bird life. An investigation is underway to identify the culprits, and action will be taken if evidence emerges.
A 14-member combined team from Kanasa and Tangi fire departments is currently engaged in firefighting operations. The Kanasa team consists of six members, while eight are deployed from Tangi, working relentlessly to control the fire and save the wildlife.
