Mumbai, Aug 29: Choreographer and director Farah Khan recently revealed some intriguing behind-the-scenes stories involving her close friend, Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, during the making of the film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. In a video shared on social media, Farah reminisced about the budget constraints they faced while working on the film and how SRK ended up serving as her assistant on one of the songs.
Speaking to Radio Nasha, Farah said, "The film was made on a shoestring budget. SRK was paid Rs 25,000 for that film. I was actually the highest-paid resource on that movie, earning Rs 5,000 per song, and there were six songs, so I was paid Rs 30,000 in total."
She further explained that the budget was so tight that they couldn't afford to hire assistants for each department. For one of the songs, they couldn't even pay professional dancers, so they recruited locals in Goa. "The locals had never done lip-sync and didn't know how to catch the beat. So, SRK used to lie down out of the frame and pinch them to get up when the beat came," she recalled.
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, directed by Kundan Shah of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro fame, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Deepak Tijori, Suchitra Krishnamurthy, and Naseeruddin Shah. The film, made on a budget of Rs 1.4 crore, grossed Rs 5.5 crore, equivalent to Rs 80 crore adjusted for inflation as of 2018. It remains memorable for its songs and Shah Rukh Khan's compelling performance.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan has since bought the rights to the film under his production banner, Red Chillies Entertainment. The movie was also remade in Telugu as Swapnalokam, directed by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao and starring Jagapathi Babu and Raasi.
