Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: The family of Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in the 2021 murder of schoolteacher Mamita Meher, met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday, demanding a fresh investigation into Sahu’s death in judicial custody.
Sahu, aged 54, was found dead inside Kantabanji Sub-Jail in Balangir district on December 20, 2022. He was reportedly discovered hanging from a window behind the jail’s kitchen area. Authorities initially ruled it a case of suicide.
However, citing suspicion of “foul play,” Sahu’s wife and daughter approached the Chief Minister at his residence and urged him to reopen the case. The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the meeting and their demand in a statement.
Sahu had been arrested as the main accused in the high-profile murder of Mamita Meher, a young teacher whose killing in October 2021 sparked widespread protests across Odisha. The case had taken a political turn after opposition parties alleged links between Sahu and then-Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra.
At the time, Sahu was serving as the president of Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling, Kalahandi—an institution reportedly frequented by ruling BJD leaders, further intensifying public and political scrutiny.
