Fake gold biscuit racket resurfaces in Nilagiri, Six detained

Nilagiri, Dec 8: A fake gold biscuit racket has once again come to light in Nilagiri. A man from the Puri was allegedly duped of Rs 4 lakh by a group promising to sell him gold biscuits. Acting on the complaint, Nilagiri Police detained six individuals and initiated interrogation.

During the operation, police recovered ₹3 lakh in cash, five mobile phones, and two motorcycles from the accused. According to sources, the victim had paid the amount as an advance after being assured that the biscuits were made of genuine gold.

Police have intensified the investigation and are currently searching for the remaining fake gold biscuits involved in the fraud.

Worth mentioning, in September 2025, police in Nilagiri busted a major counterfeit-gold brick racket. A man from Ganjam district, lured by promises of cheap gold, visited Nilagiri and paid ₹16 lakh after being shown gold-looking bricks. Instead of real gold, he was supplied brass bars painted with gold finish.

The accused reportedly even took a small advance payment (₹6,000) to “test” samples — which passed at a local jewelry shop. Convinced, the man returned with ₹16 lakh for the full purchase. Once payment was made, the fraudsters disappeared.

Police investigation led to arrests of several suspects from Nilagiri and surrounding areas, and seizure of cash and a motorcycle.
