Execution of Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen postponed, confirms Government sources

New Delhi, July 15:  In a significant development, the scheduled execution of Indian national Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala who has been on death row in Yemen, has been postponed. The news was confirmed by official government sources on Tuesday, bringing a reprieve to a case that has garnered widespread attention and diplomatic concern.

Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, was set to be executed on Wednesday following her conviction for the murder of a Yemeni citizen in July 2017. She has been incarcerated in Yemen since her arrest and subsequent sentencing, with her case becoming the focus of legal, humanitarian, and diplomatic efforts over the years.

Priya, a qualified nurse who had traveled to Yemen for employment opportunities, was found guilty of killing a local man under circumstances that she has consistently claimed involved personal and professional abuse. The incident reportedly stemmed from a complex situation involving forgery of documents, exploitation, and a desperate attempt to escape mistreatment.

The postponement of her execution is being viewed as a potential window of opportunity for renewed diplomatic dialogue. Indian authorities, along with international human rights organizations and advocacy groups, have been pressing for clemency and legal reconsideration, citing humanitarian grounds and the nuances surrounding the case.

Efforts by the Indian government, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Djibouti (which oversees Yemen affairs), have intensified in recent weeks. The postponement is believed to be the outcome of sustained behind-the-scenes negotiations and appeals.

While the delay offers a glimmer of hope to Priya’s family and supporters, the future remains uncertain. Her mother and other family members have made repeated pleas to the Indian government for intervention and are also exploring the possibility of paying "blood money" — a form of legal compensation allowed under Yemeni law that could pave the way for her release if accepted by the victim’s family.

As of now, no new date for the execution has been announced. Government sources have reiterated that India continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to pursuing all available legal and diplomatic avenues to save the life of Nimisha Priya.
