Mumbai, Jan 26: Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra will be conferred with the Padma Vibhushan posthumously, a decision that has brought joy and pride to his family. Reacting to the announcement, his wife, actress and politician Hema Malini, shared an emotional statement highlighting his immense contribution to Indian cinema and the love he received from audiences over the decades.

Expressing her happiness, Hema Malini said the entire family is “extremely happy and excited” about the honour. She added that while the family wished Dharmendra had received the award during his lifetime, they remain grateful for the recognition. “He truly deserved it. He made a significant contribution to the film industry,” she said, adding that the honour has filled their hearts with pride.

Hema also pointed out that Dharmendra never chased awards and accolades. Apart from a Lifetime Achievement Award, he did not receive any major Filmfare awards during his lifetime. However, she emphasised that the love and respect he earned from people across all sections of society were far more meaningful and deeply touching.

Calling him a “true actor,” Hema Malini said Dharmendra enriched the industry by portraying a wide range of characters and inspired generations of young actors. Speaking about life after his passing, she said the family is now living with his memories. “When he left, an entire era went with him,” she remarked.

She also expressed gratitude to the government for finally acknowledging his contribution to Indian cinema, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held Dharmendra in high regard and that the legendary actor also had deep respect and affection for the Prime Minister.
