Emirati royal admits child neglect following public intoxication episode
Mahrah Al Nahyan, an Emirati royal by marriage, has received a two-year community order after admitting to child neglect at Southwark Crown Court. Public members discovered the 32-year-old unconscious on a busy London street on June 13. She was slumped against pavement railings while a barefoot three-year-old child played near moving traffic on a scooter.
Court proceedings and financial penalties
UK legal authorities confirmed that bystanders cared for the toddler until emergency responders secured the scene. During her court appearance on Tuesday, the presiding judge mandated a two-year community order alongside strict rehabilitation requirements. Officials also ordered her to pay court costs and fines totaling roughly £6,114, which equates to $11,500. The judge noted that without the quick intervention of strangers, the young child faced severe risks of injury or harm. Drug-related child welfare cases in UK courts heavily weigh active rehabilitation efforts during the final sentencing phase.
Defense statements and medical recovery
Legal representation for Nahyan clarified that she had not consumed illegal substances on the actual day of the incident. Her defence lawyer stated she was experiencing severe physical exhaustion following heavy cocaine use in the preceding days. Police searches uncovered drug paraphernalia in her personal bags, though no actual narcotics were present at the scene.
Since the alarming event, she has entered a residential treatment program at the Priory clinic in Surrey to actively address her addiction issues. The defense highlighted her significant remorse and strong resolve to overcome these challenges, acknowledging the grave mistake made that afternoon. She plans to continue day treatment and attend support groups upon finishing her current residential program.
