Winter Tightens Grip on Odisha

Severe cold wave conditions sweep across Odisha's interior districts

Winter has intensified across the state of Odisha, with temperatures taking a sharp dip in both the plains and hill stations. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar for December 8, 2025, distinct cold wave conditions are now being felt in isolated pockets of the state.

Plummeting Temperatures in the Hills and Plains

The chill is most severe in the hill stations, where G. Udayagiri recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature at a freezing 4.3°C. Following closely, Similiguda recorded a minimum of 4.6°C. In the plains, Phulbani emerged as the coldest urban center, recording a minimum temperature of 7.2°C, significantly lower than the average for this time of year. Daringibadi, often referred to as the Kashmir of Odisha, also reported a chilly night at 7.5°C.

Cold Wave and Fog Warnings

The IMD has highlighted that cold wave conditions currently prevail in isolated pockets over the districts of Angul and Jharsuguda. This drop in mercury is accompanied by visibility issues in certain regions. Residents in Phulbani woke up to dense fog, with visibility dropping between 50 and 200 meters. Meanwhile, Rourkela experienced moderate fog conditions, and shallow fog was reported in Bhawanipatna and Jharsuguda.

Twin Cities Feel the Chill

The capital city is not immune to the dropping mercury. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 12.1°C, which is a significant departure of -3.8°C from the normal range. Cuttack followed a similar trend with a minimum of 12.4°C, marking a departure of -2.2°C from the norm.

Overview of State Weather

While dry weather prevailed over most districts, the significant drop in minimum temperatures across the board indicates that winter is settling in firmly. The highest maximum temperature in the state was recorded in Jharsuguda at 30.2°C, showing a wide contrast between day and night temperatures in western Odisha.

Residents, especially in the interior districts of Angul, Phulbani, and Keonjhar, are advised to take precautions against the cold wave and reduced visibility during early morning commutes.
