Puri, May 16: A disturbing case of familial abuse has come to light in Puri, where an elderly couple, Dayanidhi Behera (80) and his wife Pramila Behera, suffered years of mental and physical torture at the hands of their two sons and daughters-in-law.
According to reports, the couple was initially overjoyed after the birth of their two sons and raised them with love and care, hoping the children would support them in old age. However, as the sons grew up, they allegedly began torturing their parents. The abuse reportedly included denial of food and other basic necessities.
After years of unbearable torment, the elderly couple approached the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) seeking justice. Acting on their complaint, the SDM registered a case (No. 6/2023) and directed the sons and daughters-in-law to leave the parental home. Following the order, the two sons, their wives, and a grandchild were evicted from the house last Friday. Their belongings were also handed over to them.
The administration’s action has been welcomed by local residents, who praised the timely intervention to protect the rights of the elderly couple. The SDM had previously instructed the sons to provide a monthly allowance of Rs 10,000 to the parents, which they allegedly ignored, further escalating the conflict.
Dayanidhi and Pramila Behera now live peacefully, with the abusers removed from their home, marking an end to years of suffering.
