Paralakhemundi, August 18: In a disturbing incident, eight members of two families from Deurisahi village under Ramagiri police limits in Gajapati district have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming poisonous mushrooms. According to medical sources, the condition of two individuals is reported to be critical.

The incident unfolded when Somanath Behera, a resident of Deurisahi, brought wild mushrooms from a nearby forest while grazing cattle. The mushrooms were later cooked and consumed by his family. A portion was also shared with the family of his elder brother, Shatapathi Behera.

Soon after dinner, members of both households began experiencing symptoms such as throat irritation, excessive sweating, and vomiting—classic signs of mushroom poisoning.

The victims were initially rushed to Ramagiri Health Center. As their condition deteriorated, they were referred to Chandragiri Group Health Center via a 108 ambulance service.

Doctors at Chandragiri have confirmed that while all eight individuals are under observation, two of them remain in critical condition.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid consuming unidentified wild mushrooms, which can often be toxic and life-threatening.
