New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, January 1: On New Year’s Day 2026, President Droupadi Murmu virtually inaugurated the IGNOU Regional Centre and Skill Centre in Rairangpur, aimed at boosting employability in northern Odisha through skill development programs.

The inauguration took place during a special event under the SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) initiative, a part of the Skill India Mission. As part of the programme, she also launched the #SkillTheNation Challenge, a nationwide initiative to encourage youth participation in artificial intelligence (AI) and skills essential for the future workforce.

In her address from the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, President Murmu emphasized the transformative power of AI in reshaping economies and societies. She said, “Artificial intelligence is emerging as a key growth driver for India’s economy. As India moves towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy, AI will play an essential role in boosting our GDP, creating jobs, and increasing productivity.”

The President further pointed out that the government, alongside industry leaders and academic institutions, is committed to not only adopting advanced technologies but also ensuring that their use fosters a responsible and inclusive future. She encouraged citizens to align with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), which aims to establish the nation as a knowledge-driven superpower through the New Education Policy.

“Skills in data science, AI engineering, and data analytics will be instrumental in nurturing India’s AI talent,” President Murmu said.

In conclusion, she awarded AI certificates to students, urging them to use their technology, knowledge, and skills for the betterment of society, solving challenges, and empowering others.
