US President demands immediate disarmament or total destruction for Hamas
US President Donald Trump delivered a fiery ultimatum to Hamas on Thursday, stating clearly that the group faces total destruction if they refuse to disarm. This severe warning came as the American leader presided over the launch of his "Board of Peace" initiative during the World Economic Forum in Davos.
While speaking at the high-profile signing ceremony, Trump emphasized that giving up weapons is a non-negotiable condition for the group. He framed this demand as the very first test for his newly established peace framework.
"If Hamas doesn’t agree to give up weapons, they’re going to be blown away," Trump asserted. He further clarified that Washington expects to know the group's intentions within the next few days or weeks at the latest.
Board of Peace Initiative
The ceremony marked the official debut of the Board of Peace. Trump has pitched this body as a new mechanism designed to oversee ceasefire rules, reconstruction efforts, and security coordination in Gaza. However, he noted its scope would eventually expand to resolve conflicts beyond the Middle East.
Trump took the seat as the inaugural chairman of the board. Leaders from Bahrain and Morocco joined him at the signing table, while Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev was also in attendance. Despite the pomp, the initiative has seen a mixed response. The United Kingdom has hesitated to join due to concerns over Russian involvement, while tensions flared with France earlier in the week regarding participation.
Global Security Claims
Beyond the Trump warns Hamas narrative, the President used the platform to highlight his administration's broader foreign policy achievements. He claimed that threats to global security are diminishing and described the Board of Peace as potentially "one of the most consequential bodies ever created."
Trump also touched upon other geopolitical hotspots. He praised US military actions against Iranian nuclear sites last summer and suggested that Iran is now willing to talk. Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, he adopted a more cautious tone, admitting that resolving that war has proven more difficult than he initially anticipated.
Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair was present at the event, receiving personal thanks from the President. Trump concluded the session by expressing his honor in leading the board, insisting that it aims to bring a "brighter day" for the Middle East.
