Billionaire Gautam Adani walks free from US bribery charges

Billionaire businessman Gautam Adani has officially cleared a major legal hurdle in the United States. US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis dismissed all criminal charges against him on Monday. Prosecutors previously accused him of offering bribes to Indian officials in 2024 to secure solar energy contracts. This rare move by the Justice Department to abandon a high-profile white-collar case raised public questions during Donald Trump's second presidential term. Adani responded quickly on the social media platform X, stating he welcomes the court decision with humility and deep respect for the legal process.

Details behind Court Dismissal

Judge Garaufis approved the request to throw out the case, but he expressed clear concerns about how federal prosecutors handled the situation. He specifically criticised Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter. McCotter reportedly worked directly with defence lawyers to drop the charges without consulting the original investigators. Department representatives pointed to a July 4 document where McCotter claimed the case was mostly foreign, difficult to prove, and did not fit current agency goals. The court also looked into a November 2024 promise where Adani offered to invest $10 billion in America. Garaufis stated he was satisfied this financial pledge did not directly influence the final decision to end the prosecution.

Civil Penalties Remain Settled

While criminal charges are gone, civil penalties tied to the US Securities and Exchange Commission remain resolved. Gautam Adani agreed to pay $6 million to settle these claims, and his nephew Sagar Adani will pay $12 million. Separately, Adani Enterprises Limited agreed to pay $275 million to the US Treasury Department regarding alleged Iran sanction violations. Lawyers noted in a July 15 declaration that the business group was open to fulfilling the investment promise as part of resolving these matters. Ultimately, the judge noted the public must decide how monetary offers impact the equal administration of justice.
