Puri, June 26: In a unique and endearing ritual observed at the famous Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Lord Jagannath is offered dental hygiene just like any common man. Every morning, a special tradition known as “Dantakastha Seva” is performed, where the Holy Trinity’s teeth are symbolically cleaned using a traditional herbal stick.
According to temple customs, a tooth-cleaning stick made from the muturi tree is used by the temple servitors to carry out this ritual. This daily practice signifies that Lord Jagannath, though divine, follows the same basic human routines, reinforcing his deep connection with his devotees.
This tradition has been going on for centuries and is an integral part of the daily seva of the deity. Just as ordinary people begin their day by brushing their teeth, the same is done for Lord Jagannath every morning by the temple servitors as part of his daily ritual.
The dantakastha used for the ritual is specially prepared, and its size and quality are carefully chosen to reflect the grandeur of the deity. These sticks are significantly larger than what an average person uses, symbolizing the divine scale of the Lord’s physical presence.
