Dhenkanal, April 30: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped and subjected to a brutal assault in an apparent attempt to murder her near a riverbank in Odisha’s Bhapur area of Dhenkanal district. The critically injured survivor is currently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
According to sources, the incident occurred on the afternoon of April 27, when the woman had gone to the nearby Sapua river for a bath. Taking advantage of her being alone, a group of miscreants allegedly assaulted her sexually. In an attempt to eliminate evidence, the accused reportedly attacked her with stones, leaving her with severe injuries to her face, head, and eyes.
Local residents rescued the woman in a critical condition and rushed her to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital. She was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced that despite a complaint being lodged at the local Bhapur police outpost, timely action was not taken. The incident has triggered panic among local residents, especially women, who are demanding stringent action against the perpetrators.
Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Ramesh Chandra Dora said that the exact nature of the crime, including allegations of rape, will be confirmed after medical examination and investigation. He added that three police teams have been formed to track down the accused and assured that the culprits will be apprehended soon.
