
Bhubaneswar, Sept 24: Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar’s production house, Dharma Productions, has announced plans to remake the highly successful Odia film Bou Buttu Bhuta, which became the highest-grossing Odia film of all time upon its release on June 12, 2025.
A public notice published in the Film Information magazine confirmed that Dharma Productions has initiated the process of acquiring the remake rights to Bou Buttu Bhuta in all Indian languages as well as globally. The acquisition includes derivative rights, enabling the production house to develop, produce, distribute, and release the film across various platforms.
The notice also specifies that Babushaan Films Private Limited, the production company behind the original film, holds the exclusive intellectual property rights to Bou Buttu Bhuta. Any parties interested in acquiring the remake rights are instructed to submit their claims in writing within 15 days from the notice's publication.
Directed by Jagdish Mishra, Bou Buttu Bhuta is a horror-thriller-comedy that tells the story of a fish farmer who becomes possessed by a ghost, triggering chaos in his village. The film stars Babushaan Mohanty, Archita Sahu, and Aparajita Mohanty in key roles, and has been praised for its unique storyline, engaging characters, and rural setting.
This upcoming remake marks a significant step in the cross-industry collaboration between Odia cinema and Bollywood, as Dharma Productions prepares to bring this hit film to a larger, national audience.
