Delhi IGI airport issues Ebola advisory for travelers from High-Risk African Countries

Delhi, May 21: Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi has issued a health advisory for passengers arriving from or transiting through countries affected by the Ebola virus. The advisory urges travelers who are feeling unwell to immediately report to airport health officials.

The advisory comes a day after the Union Health Secretary held a high-level review meeting with state authorities to assess preparedness and response measures against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The airport has identified Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan as “high-risk” countries and asked passengers traveling from these regions to take immediate action if unwell. Symptoms to watch for include fever, weakness or fatigue, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained bleeding, and sore throat.

Passengers who have had direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of suspected or confirmed Ebola patients are also instructed to report to the airport health desk before immigration clearance.

The advisory further warns that anyone developing these symptoms within 21 days of arrival should seek medical attention immediately and inform healthcare authorities of their travel history. Travelers are also urged to cooperate with health screening procedures and public health measures under the International Health Regulations (IHR).

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness endemic to the tropical forests of Congo. According to the Africa CDC, it spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, contaminated materials, or those who have died from the disease.

So far, 51 cases have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), though the World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that the scale of the outbreak may be larger than reported.
