New Delhi, February 17: The Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi has unanimously decided to oppose the proposed Advocate Amendment Bill 2025. In protest, the committee has called for a complete strike from judicial work across all District Courts in Delhi on Monday.
According to the committee, the proposed bill is unjust and biased, prompting the legal fraternity to take collective action. In a communication to its members, the association urged lawyers to participate, stating, "Members are encouraged to support this effort to safeguard the dignity and independence of the legal profession." Additionally, judicial officers have been requested to refrain from passing adverse orders in cases scheduled for the day as a gesture of solidarity.
The Government of India has recently invited public feedback on the Draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to modernize and strengthen the legal framework in the country. The proposed amendments seek to refine the Advocates Act of 1961, originally introduced to regulate the legal profession, protect client interests, and uphold professional standards. The Act also established the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils to oversee legal conduct and discipline.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Law and Justice emphasized the government's commitment to reforming the legal sector to ensure fairness, transparency, and accessibility. The proposed amendments aim to address contemporary challenges and align legal education and practice with global standards. The reforms will focus on enhancing legal education, equipping lawyers for an evolving legal landscape, and upholding professional ethics, ultimately contributing to a just and equitable society.
As part of the public consultation process, the Department of Legal Affairs has prepared a comparative statement outlining existing provisions and proposed amendments. The department has invited comments and feedback from the public to ensure comprehensive discussions before implementing the changes.
