Gahirmatha, Ap 10: A giant blue whale carcass was discovered washed ashore near the Madali river mouth in the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary on Thursday, raising concerns among forest officials and marine experts.

Forest staff detected the decomposed whale early in the morning and immediately informed the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO). A team led by Forest Range Officer Kapilendra Pradhan and Veterinary Officer Dr. Prakash Kumar Jena reached the remote site by boat to examine the situation.

Preliminary assessments revealed the whale was a female, approximately 4–5 years old. Officials estimate the animal died at sea 12–15 days ago, as nearly half of the carcass had decomposed. The body emitted a strong odor, making detailed inspection challenging.

Experts believe strong winds and tidal currents may have carried the carcass ashore. While the exact cause of death remains unknown, officials suggested a possible collision with a fishing trawler or other unidentified factors.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past, with two large whales washing ashore near the Chinchiri river mouth and Kantia Khai about five years ago. The Gahirmatha coast is a significant marine habitat, frequently sighted by blue whales and other marine species.

Authorities continue to investigate to determine the precise cause of death.
