Phulbani, June 16: A remarkable example of civic responsibility has emerged from Paburia village under Tikabali block in Odisha's Kandhamal district, where a daily wage labourer has taken it upon himself to manage traffic and prevent accidents without seeking any remuneration.
Basanta Kumar Burgi, a resident of Paburia village, has become a familiar figure at the busy Paburia four-road junction, where traffic congestion and road accidents have become a recurring concern. Disturbed by the growing traffic problems and the risk posed to commuters, he decided to step forward and serve the community voluntarily.
For more than fifteen days, Basanta has been regulating traffic at the crowded intersection from morning until night, armed only with a whistle and a strong sense of responsibility. Despite earning his livelihood as a daily wage labourer, he has set aside his work to dedicate his time to public service, helping pedestrians and motorists navigate the junction safely.
According to local residents, Basanta's commitment is driven by personal experience, as a member of his family had previously been injured in a road accident. Determined to ensure that others do not suffer a similar fate, he chose to take proactive measures to improve road safety in the village.
His selfless efforts have earned widespread appreciation from villagers and people across the area. Residents have praised his dedication and sense of social responsibility, describing his work as an inspiring example of how an individual can make a meaningful difference in the community through voluntary service.
Basanta's initiative has not only helped ease traffic congestion but has also highlighted the importance of public participation in addressing local challenges.
