Cyclone Montha hits Andhra Pradesh, causes widespread damage & fatalities

Amlapuram, Oct 29: Cyclone Montha made landfall near Amlapuram in Andhra Pradesh around 11:30 PM on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The cyclone has claimed at least three lives so far, with reports confirming the death of an elderly woman in Kona Seema district after a tree fell on her house. Two other fatalities have been reported, but their exact locations are still being confirmed. Authorities are assessing the damage as the storm weakens, and recovery efforts are currently underway.

In response to the cyclone’s impact, the Andhra Pradesh government has imposed a nighttime curfew across seven districts as a precautionary measure. Emergency services are working relentlessly to restore power and clear debris from blocked roads. Local authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and remain alert as the storm's effects continue to be felt across the region.

The storm has caused significant damage throughout several parts of the state, particularly along the coast. Homes have been destroyed, trees have been uprooted, and power lines have been brought down. The coastal areas have suffered the most severe impacts.

The landfall process lasted for nearly four hours, with wind speeds ranging from 90 to 100 km/h, and gusts reaching up to 110 km/h in some areas. The cyclone crossed the Andhra Pradesh coastline late Tuesday night, before gradually weakening as it moved inland. Despite losing strength, the storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, which led to widespread damage.

In districts like Machilipatnam and Kakinada, large trees were uprooted, blocking roads, and electricity poles were toppled. Many homes in these areas have been either severely damaged or completely destroyed. Meanwhile, waves in the sea reached up to 5 meters, further adding to the chaos along the coast.
