ICC confirms African hosts for 2027 Cricket World Cup

Johannesburg officially hosted the launch event for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, confirming the sport's flagship tournament will take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah described this return to African soil after a 24-year gap as a landmark moment. He expressed confidence that the three host nations will deliver an unforgettable event highlighting the warmth and diversity of the region. Historically, cricket in Africa has experienced significant regional growth over the last two decades, with development programs consistently producing competitive talent well beyond traditional powerhouse nations.

Venues and Cultural Theme

Organizers presented 12 official venues during Thursday's ceremony in Johannesburg. South Africa will provide eight locations, including Wanderers Stadium, SuperSport Park, Newlands Cricket Ground, Kingsmead, St George's Park, Mangaung Oval, Boland Park, and Buffalo Park. Zimbabwe offers three grounds—Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club, and Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium. Namibia's capital, Windhoek, will host games at the Namibia Cricket Ground.

Officials also introduced the central theme, 'Three Nations, One Heartbeat'. This concept embraces the African philosophy of Ubuntu, meaning "I am, because we are." It aims to highlight unity, compassion, and human connection across 29 officially recognised languages and various regional traditions. The visual branding features a geometric design inspired by an African wire bowl, utilizing vibrant local colours like Zimbabwe Chilli, Fynbos Pop, and Namib Dune.

Fresh Three Stage Match Format

Next year's tournament brings significant structural changes across 57 scheduled matches. Organizers introduced a new three-stage format to improve competitiveness and fan engagement. Competition begins with a Super Series where the three lowest-ranked teams, from 12th to 14th, play a round-robin format to determine who advances.

Following this initial phase, 12 teams split into two groups of six for round-robin play. The top three sides from each group, plus the best fourth-placed team overall, move into the Super 7 stage. This intense phase includes 21 matches. Finally, the top four teams progress to the semi-finals, matching the table-toppers against the fourth-placed team, and the second-ranked side against the third to decide the finalists.
