New Delhi, February 8: The Congress party has suffered a crushing defeat in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections for the third consecutive time, failing to win a single seat on Saturday, February 8.
This marks another significant blow for a party that once dominated Delhi’s political scene under the leadership of the late Sheila Dikshit, who served as Chief Minister for 15 years, from 1998 to 2013.
The party’s decline began in 2013 when it secured only eight seats but still supported the formation of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government by providing outside support. However, since then, Congress has struggled in the subsequent elections, failing to win any seats in the 2015, 2020, and now the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
Sandeep Dikshit, son of Sheila Dikshit, acknowledged defeat from the New Delhi constituency in the 2025 polls. Similarly, Alka Lamba, another prominent Congress leader, was also defeated in Kalkaji.
Despite running a candidate-focused campaign and aiming to regain the trust of minority and Dalit voters, Congress’s strategy did not resonate with the electorate. The party targeted 20 key constituencies, but their efforts failed to produce significant results.
In a surprising twist, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lost to BJP's Parvesh Verma by more than 4,000 votes, according to data from the Election Commission of India. Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit secured just over 4,500 votes, finishing in third place.
With this historic third consecutive defeat, Congress’s political relevance in Delhi continues to shrink, raising questions about the party’s future direction and leadership in the capital.
