New Delhi, May 11: The Congress party on Sunday criticized US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, calling it a move to internationalize the Kashmir issue. The party reiterated its longstanding demand for a special session of Parliament in light of recent developments, including the Pahalgam attack.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said, “The Indian armed forces have once again demonstrated their unmatched capability. However, President Trump's sudden announcement of a ceasefire is surprising and unprecedented.”
Regarding Trump’s social media post, Pilot added, “This is an attempt to bring a bilateral matter under international scrutiny. Congress demands that Parliament reconvene and reaffirm the 1994 resolution declaring Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) an integral part of India.”
He also drew a parallel with the 1971 Indo-Pak war, praising then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for resisting American pressure and prioritising national interest. “Despite the US deploying its 7th Fleet in the Bay of Bengal, Indira Gandhi remained firm. Today, she is remembered for putting the nation first,” Pilot noted.
Highlighting past unity during crises, Pilot said, “During the Parliament attack, Sonia Gandhi stood firmly with the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Even now, the opposition has supported the government, but Trump’s announcement undermines India’s sovereign position on Kashmir.”
Following the ceasefire development, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed via its official ‘X’ handle that it had completed assigned missions under Operation Sindoor “with precision and professionalism.” It emphasized that operations are still ongoing and urged restraint in spreading unverified information.
“The IAF urges all to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information. A detailed briefing will be conducted in due course,” the post stated.
