Bhubaneswar, Sep 18: The Congress party on Thursday submitted a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government in Odisha, citing multiple governance failures. The motion was formally submitted to the Speaker through the Assembly Secretary.
Congress leaders claimed the support of 15 MLAs for the motion, including their own 14 legislators in the 147-member House. CPI(M) MLA Laxman Munda has reportedly extended his backing, though the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the principal opposition party, has not yet taken a clear position on the motion.
The Congress has been vocal in its criticism of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s government, accusing it of failing on several fronts. Congress Legislature Party Leader Ramchandra Kadam said the decision to move the no-confidence motion stemmed from the government’s inaction on critical issues including women’s safety, law and order, and the hardships faced by farmers, Dalits, tribals, and OBCs.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhakta Charan Das had earlier urged the BJD to take the lead in bringing the motion during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
