Bhubaneswar, Nov 11: A cold wave has tightened its grip over Odisha, with temperatures dipping sharply across several parts of the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold conditions will persist for the next two days, affecting Cuttack, Angul, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, and Khordha districts.

For the first time this season, the mercury has slipped below 10°C, with G. Udayagiri recording the state’s lowest temperature at 8.4°C. Daringbadi followed closely at 10°C, a drop of one degree from Saturday night’s 11°C. In Phulbani, the temperature fell from 12°C to 11°C, while Rourkela and Keonjhar recorded dips to 12.5°C and 13.8°C respectively. The cold wave continues to sweep through Kandhamal, where residents are reeling under the chill.

On Sunday night, as many as 16 cities recorded temperatures below 15°C. Jharsuguda logged 11.6°C, Kirei 12.2°C, Semiliguda, Rourkela, and Angul 12.6°C, Dhenkanal 13.5°C, Bhawanipatna and Sundargarh 14°C, Koraput 14.2°C, Balangir 14.5°C, Bhubaneswar 14.8°C, and Sonepur 14.9°C.

In Bhubaneswar, the night temperature dropped by nearly 3°C, remaining 5.8°C below normal. Jharsuguda recorded a deviation of 6.3°C below normal, while Cuttack, Phulbani, and Titilagarh were around 3°C below normal.

Meteorologists have warned that the chill will intensify in the coming days, with night temperatures expected to fall by another 2–3°C across several regions. The IMD has forecast that by Tuesday, both Phulbani and Jharsuguda will record temperatures around 10°C.

Dr. Sarat Sahu, Director of the SOA Centre for Climate and Environment, said light rainfall is likely in some parts of Odisha on November 17 and 18. “After the rainfall, the cold is expected to increase further,” Dr. Sahu added.
