​​​​​​​Dhaka, Oct 18: The Cargo terminal and flight operations in the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh's Dhaka were jeopardized on Saturday due to a major fire mishap.

The spark reportedly began around 2:30 pm when a sudden fire broke out in the airport’s cargo village all of a sudden.The flames expanded soon to the warehouse where imported goods are stored.

The executive director of the airport, Md Masudul Hasan Masud, confirmed the situation at 3:45 pm, assuring that emergency measures were initiated soon to contain the fire.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the fire was contained following the combined efforts of the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority, the Fire Service, and two fire units of the Bangladesh Air Force.

According to reports, the Navy also joined the dousing operation to assist in containing the blaze, to check the flames before devouring the other units of the establishment.

Following the incident,all landings and takeoffs were suspended, and red alert was issued for the airliners  till further notice.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained whereas the extent of damage is also under assessment.
